In Years 9&10, students again follow a core curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science, History and Geography and PDHPE, with their choice of elective subjects.

Vocational Education Courses

There is a strong and effective VET program for senior students at Kurri Kurri High School.  VET framework courses in Metal and Engineering, Hospitality, Information Technology, and Construction are the VET courses taught by accredited school staff.    These courses all have a workplacement component.  Many students also study a TAFE course as part of their senior curriculum.

Students in Year 9 participate in a Community Based Learning program and students in Year 10 are able to spend one week learning in the workplace in a Work Experience program as part of their careers study (School to Work).  Also see Careers and VET Information.

Religious Education

Students in Year 7 are given the opportunity to participate in our Special Religious Education (SRE) program.  A trained SRE teacher is provided by the local churches.

Sport

School sport is an important part of the education of all children.  All students are encouraged to participate in a variety of sports over the years.  Students should avoid making appointments on Wednesday afternoons to visit the doctor, dentist etc.  A note should be provided for absences from sport for any reason.

A supervised non-sport room is provided for students who are unable to participate in sporting activities due to injury etc.  They can do revision and private study during this time.

Our sport program consists of:-

Weekly Sport

On Wednesday afternoons, all students from Years 7 to 11 participate in the weekly sport program.

A wide range of different sports is offered for student choice.

Our sport program aims to encourage fitness.

Sports afternoons are an opportunity to interact with others and have fun.

Carnivals

Three carnivals are held each year – swimming, cross-country and athletics.  Students compete in their Sports House based on their family name.  Our sports houses are Aboriginal names.

L-R    -    Lutana (Moon) – white

S-Z    -    Neewarra (Sky) – blue

Successful students from these carnivals have the opportunity to be selected to compete at zone, regional and state (CHS) levels.

Knock-Out Competitions

Our entry to inter-school sporting competitions varies from year to year, but usually includes - Basketball, Rugby League, Soccer, Australian Rules, Hockey, Netball, Touch Football, Squash, Lawn Bowls, Cricket, Indoor Cricket, Golf, Volleyball.

Support Unit Program

Two classes operate in our Support Unit - one class for Intellectual Mild (IM) students and the other for Intellectual Moderate/Severe (IO/IS).  Students within these classes study a varied curriculum.  All students complete units of work from all Key Learning Areas.  Some units of work are studied in their normal classroom and at other times they attend lessons in other areas of the school with staff members outside the special education faculty.  Many of the students are integrated into mainstream subjects such as visual art, ceramics, childcare, hospitality, science and PE for part of their curriculum.

Students in our Support Unit are extensively engaged in learning activities using appropriate technology.  They access computers, digital cameras, interactive SmartBoards and use a wide variety of learning software programs.  This is made possible by external funding support through the Liddell Program.
